 …but it all started on December 5, 1492, when Christopher Columbus landed on an unknown island and saw the tribes of Taino Indians inhabiting it since 600. Initially, the island was named Hispaniola. For most of its history, the Dominican Republic was known as Santo Domingo, now the name of the island's capital - its cultural and economic center. The city was discovered on August 5, 1496, by Bartolomeo Columbus, the brother of Christopher Columbus.

The first part of the name is given in honor of the Spanish Queen Isabella, and the second - is in honor of the patron saint Dominic. Saint Dominic de Guzman Garces was a monk, preacher, and founder of the Dominican Order. It is also the patron saint of Dominico Columbus, the father of Christopher and Bartolomeo. The memorial day of this saint in the Catholic Church is August 8.

  The emergence of the modern Dominican Republic was preceded by centuries of very complex and vivid historical events, including numerous uprisings, revolutions caused by the occupation of other countries, internecine internal conflicts, and coups d'etat. Today, the Dominican Republic is the ninth-largest economy among the Caribbean countries with one of the highest annual GDP growth rates in the western hemisphere. The government has the world's second-largest gold mine.
